Thromboembolism associated with new anti-cancer treatment strategies in combination with conventional chemotherapy: new drugs, old risks?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Thrombosis is a frequent complication of cancer, and the presence of a tumour confers a prothrombotic state. Despite modern interventions, venous and (rarely) arterial thromboembolic disorders are still among the most common complications of cancer, and are a cause of substantial morbidity and mortality in these patients. The severity, number of complications, and recurrence rates of thromboembolic disease are also substantially greater. Recurrent thromboembolism is more likely to occur in patients with cancer as in healthy individuals, even when established on oral anticoagulant therapy, and these patients tend to need longer stays in hospital, respond less well to oral anticoagulant therapy, and have a poorer prognosis. Some cancers are more likely to be prothrombotic than others, but this feature is also influenced by disease staging, immobility, and being in hospital, as well as by interventions such as surgery or chemotherapy. What is less known are the thomboembolic risks associated with new treatment strategies for cancer. Two such strategies, the inhibition of angiogenesis and matrix metalloproteinases, are worthy of some further discussion.

Idarubicin-bromelain combination sensitizes cancer cells to conventional chemotherapy
Objective(s): The primary cytotoxic effects of anticancer drugs like idarubicin, a chemotherapeutic agent, are not limited to neoplastic cells; they also produce similar effects in normal cells. In this study, we hypothesized that the combination of idarubicin-bromelain could make cancer cells more susceptible to cytotoxicity and genotoxicity.Material...
متن کاملNew Approaches to Use Nanoparticles for Treatment of Colorectal Cancer; a Brief Review
Nanoparticles have been at the center of research focus as a new promising material for the treatment of cancer in recent years. Although many chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment are available, their potential toxicity is the main point of concern. On the other hand, the conventional chemotherapeutic approach has not been found to be very efficient in colorectal cancer (CRC) as the drug mol...
متن کاملCombination of antiangiogenesis with chemotherapy for more effective cancer treatment.
Angiogenesis is a hallmark of tumor development and metastasis and is now a validated target for cancer treatment. However, the survival benefits of antiangiogenic drugs have thus far been rather modest, stimulating interest in developing more effective ways to combine antiangiogenic drugs with established chemotherapies. This review discusses recent progress and emerging challenges in this fie...
متن کاملEvaluation of mean platelet volume as a predictive marker for cancer-associated venous thromboembolism during chemotherapy.
Mean platelet volume has been proposed as a predictor for venous thromboembolism in cancer. We, therefore, investigated the effects of different anti-cancer drugs on mean platelet volume in order to assess its possible value in the risk prediction of a first thromboembolic episode in cancer outpatients during treatment. Pre-treatment mean platelet volumes were retrospectively evaluated in 589 a...
